Authorities say that at least eight people are dead after a fire broke out on a marina in far northeast Alabama, filled with house and recreational boats early on Monday. Officials says the fire destroyed 35 vessels at Jackson County Park, along the Tennessee River, in Scottsboro, Alabama, about 100 miles northeast of Birmingham and 40 miles east of Huntsville.
Scottsboro firefighters and Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the blaze, which was reported at about 12:40 a.m., officials said. Seven boaters were treated at a local hospital, most for hypothermia having jumped into the water to escape flames, officials said. It was about 43 degrees in Scottsboro when the fire began.
